Himalayan Salt is a marketing term used to describe the translucent, pale pink to dark orange, rock salt that is mined in the foothills of the sacred Himalayas. It comes from the Salt Range which is a hill system in the Punjab province of Pakistan, and the largest mining location is the Khewra Salt Mines located about 190 miles from the Himalayan mountain ranges.
In fact, the original mineral name for Himalayan Salt is Halite, which stems from the Greek words halos, meaning “salt, sea” and lithos meaning “rock”.
It is a wonderful mineral combination with powerful healing properties and many super easy uses. The 16 most common of them are explained below.
1. Natural mineral powerhouse
Himalayan Rock Salt is widely recognized for its high mineral content – it has a remarkable total of 84 minerals. The human body needs this salt crystal for a variety of reasons. For instance, sodium is an essential mineral found in the salt. It helps to contract and relax muscles, maintain proper fluid balance and prevent dehydration. It also facilitates the sending of nervous system impulses, helps to prevent low blood pressure, and reduces the risk of infection and kills harmful bacteria. In addition to sodium, Himalayan salt is relatively high in iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, and chloride. It also contains trace minerals like boron, fluoride, iodine, zinc, manganese, selenium and copper, all of which are necessary for bodily health. Because it is harvested naturally, Himalayan salt contains all these minerals without chemical processing or refinement. A decent way how to take in all these nutrients is by making salt water Sole (pronounced so-lay), which is water that has been fully saturated with Himalayan salt to the point where it won’t absorb any more. This is the form of the salt that is easiest for the body to absorb.
2. Air quality booster
Himalayan Salt has hygroscopic properties which help to reduce pollution in the air. It attracts pollutants and neutralizes them from the air, which is beneficial for those who suffer from asthma, allergies from pets, hay fever and mold. For example, in the form of a salt lamp, it balances the air quality by reducing dust, pollen, and bacteria.
3. Aura cleanser
Since the ancient times, salt has been used to cleanse the space, objects, and body energetically too. It has been practiced by spreading the salt around the space, rubbing the objects, or scrubbing the skin with it. Himalayan salt is considered to be the best aura cleanser, and therefore is often used as a natural scrub, during many sacred rituals proceeded by natural oiling procedures.
4. Protection from negativity
For similar reasons as the energetic scrubbing, the Himalayan salt can be used for protection of home from negativity, evil spirits, and the evil eye. Chunks of salt can be placed around the house to create a grid-like pattern which shields the space with positive crystalline energy.
5. Serenity promoter
The color energy from the soft, light pink hues of Himalayan salt brings sensations of self-love, calmness, serenity and loving kindness to the mind. It is the perfect lighting for any kind of sacred retreat or meditation space. It is also ideal to use the Himalayan salt lamps or candle holders on the bedside tables because the energy they emit helps to calm the thoughts and deepen the connection between partners.
6. Source of negative ions
It is necessary to have as many negative ions as possible indoors because they mimic the good impact of nature and fresh air on the body. One of the easiest ways to invite nature indoors is with the use of gemstones, crystals, and minerals, such as the Himalayan salt. It’s important to have those natural sources of negative ions around the house because they contribute to the production of many essential hormones, such as serotonin which alleviates stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s also clear that a healthy balance of negative ions can boost the natural energy levels and immune system.
7. The emotional balance
The Himalayan salt can be especially helpful for those who suffer from mood swings, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). For example, the soft glow of Himalayan salt lamp can help one to feel better and more balanced emotionally. The therapeutic use of it has proven to increase the positive vibration of any setting, thus boosting the positivity and vitality level in sensitive people.
8. Crystal purification
Because of its purification properties, Himalayan salt is one of the most valuable minerals to use when cleansing other crystals. Thus, placing crystals and gemstones in a bowl of salt will rid them of all the negative energy and impurities they have collected over time and use.
9. EMF Neutralizer
Large sized Himalayan Salt Lamps are often used to cleanse the atmosphere around indoor pollutants and from harmful electromagnetic emissions. They can neutralize the effects of electronic devices to some extent.
10. The perfect spice
Himalayan Salt is used in the same manner as common table salt – in cooking, to season meals, and to preserve food. It can be used in cooking either in whole pieces or ground up for more delicate seasoning. Because of their larger size, Himalayan rock salt pieces are best added whole to the final stages of cooking soups, stews, and sauces where the high liquid content lets them dissolve while cooking. It is suggested not to add the salt at the beginning of the cooking process because during prolonged heating the mineral content loses its value. Himalayan salt can also be easily ground with a mortar and pestle or a salt grinder to create smaller sized grains. To keep your sodium consumption in check, measure out the amount of salt you use. A one-quarter teaspoon of salt has 500 milligrams of sodium per serving (The maximum advisable amount of Sodium per day is 2300 mg, which amounts to 1 teaspoon or 6 grams of salt). The variety of other minerals would amount to the equivalent dosage per day.
11. Antibacterial cooking device
Even blocks of the pink salt have become increasingly popular to use. They can be used as plates for serving dishes, cooking surfaces for baking in the oven or on the stove, and natural cutting boards. Using it so adds a special flavor to the food and kills germs from the products. This is also due to the low porosity and moisture retention of the salt which makes it a naturally anti-microbial environment. In order to prevent cracking of the surface, salt blocks must be heated slowly – no more than 90ºC/200 ºF per 15 minutes. That said, Himalayan pink salt also has extreme temperature resistance with a melting point of just over 800 ºC (a little under 1500 ºF) making it excellent for high-heat cooking! Just be sure to have a good solid salt block holder for safe carrying of your super-hot salt block.
12. Aesthetic beauty
Both Himalayan salt lamps, candle holders and other items offer a calming, and romantic atmosphere. They are pleasant and uplifting to look at. The natural aesthetic beauty of the pink salt makes it a wonderful design element and home decor.
13. Bath salt
Himalayan salt can be perfectly used in place of other manufactured bath salts. The best practice is to add a cup of it to the bath, along with a bit of rose water, flower petals, and a mix of essential oils of choice which makes it a truly relaxing and revitalizing self-care ritual. The warm bath water opens up the pores and allows the skin to absorb the precious minerals while detoxifying the body from toxins.
14. Psycho-emotional healing
Carrying a chunk of Himalayan salt can help to release attachments, including emotional attachments. It supports the healing of the broken heart. It has gentle but strong grounding and centering energies. It’s also said to bring abundance and well-being to family life.
15. Salt crystal healing layouts
Physically Himalayan salt can be used in crystal body layouts to stimulate the meridians and chakra centers, as well as to soothe dehydration, low blood pressure, diarrhea or other intestinal issues, and to boost physical strength during recovery.
16. Connection to Earth
Himalayan salt is associated primarily with the Root chakra, as well as the Heart chakra due to the pink color frequency. Himalayan salt, among other types of salts, is related to the Earth element.
Final Note: Himalayan salt is a very soft mineral, it absorbs moisture and can dissolve in water, so please be careful – never cleanse Himalayan salt lamps or other items with water (instead – blow dry or dry cloth).
I truly hope that you’ve had as many lovely experiences with the Himalayan salt as I’ve had, if not – then may this blog post inspire you to make the best use of this salty, pinkish mineral gem! 🙂
